Purpose Under Pressure
Do you have a purpose strategy? Most of the time, we think about purpose as an abstract idea. But what if I told you that there is a way you can be completely confident you are living your life in PURPOSE!
I will never forget my father telling me, at the age of 11, that he and my mother were HIV positive. Until this point in my life, I couldn’t have been any happier. I played sports, attended a private school, had a stay-at-home mother who met all my needs, and even traveled the country for free, because my father was a Delta executive. Needless to say, in a matter of moments, my dream life came crashing down.
By the time I turned 13, my father passed. Two years later, mom followed. Experiencing such extraordinary pain, at such a young age, sent me spiralling down into sexual promiscuity, depression, drug & alcohol abuse and dangerous criminal activity. What I didn’t quite understand at the time was how women, drugs, power & money were only masking my pain instead of making it better. What I was hoping would help me, only resulted in a higher level of pressure & pain.
I know what you are thinking. What does this have to do with purpose? EVERYTHING! Pain…problems…pressure will either develop your purpose or destroy your purpose. In my case, pain almost destroyed my purpose. I spent so much time being angry, unforgiving, and feeling sorry for myself that my purpose was almost destroyed!
Notice, I said almost! Something changed…it wasn’t overnight, but by grace and the application of what we call “Purpose Under Pressure Principles,” over time, I realized that the pain and pressure I was feeling did not have to prevent my purpose, it could actually help fulfill it!!! This mindset shift was the genesis of a major transformation in my life.
I was able to go from angry to encouraged, unforgiving to understanding, and depressed to extremely delighted about life and my purpose for existence.
Overcoming my past hurts, learning to forgive and living a life of purpose have open up doors that I could only dream! My story of transforming pain into purpose has been featured on numerous media outlets including ESPN’s The Undefeated, Huffington Post, TBN’s 700 Club and many, many more. I am the Founder & Executive Director of an at-risk youth 501 (c) 3 called the McKie Foundation, church planter, and my book Adversity Creates Purpose has helped thousands of people overcome their challenges, find purpose, and maximize their potential. What I am most proud of is this… I have been a faithful husband to my beautiful and supportive wife Linda and a loving father to two of the best children in the world, my son Jahlyn & daughter Elyse.
This transformation did not happen overnight; it took the application of several principles that we like to call our “Purpose Under Pressure Principles.”
Why do some people flourish under pressure & then others fail when life’s situations don’t go as planned?!
I'll tell you exactly what the difference is…Re-wiring your brain!
How Re-wiring your Brain Works
Here is where introduce one of my closest friends & Purpose Under Pressure Partners, Dr. Michael Perry, Founder & COO of Catalyst Human Performance Experts! Dr. Perry spent years leading in very high pressure situations during over 20 years in the military & after he retired a Lieutenant Colonel, he founded Catalyst to help leaders create winning culture and exceptional team performance through the collective power of relationships build on a foundation of shared purpose, service, and trust.
Dr. Perry holds a Ph.D. in psychology, and he teaches that we have the ability overcome pressure and problems through Focus, Confidence, Commitment, and Adaptability–allowing us to zero-in on the facets of our work and personal life that are most impactful, relevant, and meaningful.
• Focus: Under pressure, each of us has a preferred way perceiving the world, processing information, and making meaning of our experiences. We’ll show how you how to overcome ineffective automatic thought processes and re-wire you brain, so that you can identify what matters most, at the time it matters most.
• Confidence: The belief that you will be successful—before you ever begin—is essential to top performance in high-pressure situations. The expectation of success is built through small victories, gradually conditioning your brain to assume that a win is coming, even when you are uncertain of exactly how it will happen. We’ll help you to begin re-wiring your brain for success!
• Commitment—Over the course of time, pressure can jeopardize your purpose by wearing you down. Commitment is your ability to do the things required remain engaged in your purpose over the course of time, no matter the obstacles. For some of us, staying the course just one day longer will be THE difference that unleashes unprecedented results. Think you can’t hold on for another day? We think you can and we’ll show you how.
• Adaptability—Your world is in a constant state of change…and so is your brain. It’s designed that way. But changes don’t come easily, especially when we would much rather keep things nice and predictable. You are already biologically designed to face unpredictable situations with innovative solutions. You just need a nudge in the right direction to enter your learning and growth zone. You guessed it. We can help!
Moral of the story: This course is grounded in proven principles and strategies that work. It’s broken down into simple, step-by-step modules that allow you to easily walk through each of the four principles for overcoming pressure & living a life of purpose.
At the end of each module is an easy-to-follow checklist and schedule so you can methodically implement what you’ve learned. No guesswork. Just follow the plan.
How Does the Course Work?
This course covers four main topics:
1. How do I live a life of power & precision, despite life’s challenges, so I maximize my purpose?
If you are going to maximize your purpose, you have to see your world clearly and free of distraction. How else will you understand what you are doing and why. You will have to master FOCUS—your first topic.
You see the world, weigh information, and make decisions in a certain way. More than likely, you have developed some preferences over time that have served you well. That’s a good thing. It allows you to be efficient in your thought process, and it provides a practical method for incorporating lessons along the way. The problem is that your preferences are usually determined by what makes you feel most comfortable and in control, rather than what might be most effective in a given situation.
A life of power and precision require crystal clear, laser focus. After you learn these foundational elements of focus, you will never see the world in the same way:
• Seeing the Big “Relevant” Picture—Giving attention to the task at hand and catching the shift
• Pressure and Preference—Predicting what you will see and what you won’t
• The Human Attentional System—Characteristics, functions, and rules
2. Confidence
They say “success breeds success.” Why is that? It seems that doing something well has the effect of creating idea that you might do it again. The reality, however, is that success can be difficult to find. There are times when you just can get a win, and others when it feels like you’ve never seen one. That’s when the “confidence killers” begin to pop up… doubt, fear, insecurity, and second-guessing, to name a few. What do you do when it seems like there is no success to build on? How do you quiet doubt and overcome fear?
Confidence begins with success. Success the fruit of practice and small wins. The truly remarkable quality of success is its similarity to flame—just a small, seemingly insignificant one can spark something uncontainable. With small wins, the expectation of success begins to extend beyond familiar tasks and takes on a more generalized quality. Ever heard someone say, “I don’t know how we’ll get it done…I just know we will!” That is the essence of confidence.
Confidence is built—and maintained—one small victory at a time. You will learn these principles to build your confidence and the confidence of those around you:
• The Role of Confidence in Pupose
• The Comfort Zone, Learning Zone and Danger Zone
• Knowing Yourself, Reshaping Thoughts, & Winning
3. Commitment
The roadmap is clear. You know what to do. Then why does it seem so difficult to follow-through sometimes? The answer is obvious. Pressure. Slowing you down. Throwing you off. Wrecking the commitment you’ve make. That’s what pressure does! It comes in the form of form of tight deadlines, financial hardships, impossible workload, anxiety, and more. If you are like most of us, you’ve at least asked yourself “the question”…“Is this really worth the headache?” Here’s the thing—if you are going keep going, whatever “it” is really must be worth the headache. How do you continue to show up consistently despite obstacles? That consistency is built on the level of Commitment you demonstrate. Whether the challenges standing in your way are personal or professional; spiritual or physical; pressed upon you or self-imposed; we will help you to keep your commitments and stay on purpose. How? You will learn these keys to maintaining commitment, no matter what:
• Aligning Personal, Spiritual, and Professional Values
• Redefining Success
• Rejuvenate, Reset, and Refocus
4. Adaptability
Here is the $1,000,000 question…How do you respond in a world that is constantly changing in ways you can’t control?
They say the only thing that’s certain is change. What??? That’s right. The “sure thing” is predictable unpredictability, whether you like it or not. It probably comes as no surprise to you that you are built for this! You adapt to everything as situations emerge or change—room temperature, public speaking, physical threats, annoying people…everything. As circumstances evolve, your ability to adapt and respond in ways that serve you effectively is essential. It is without question that you will have to adapt rapidly to changes if you are going to effectively accomplish anything. Good news…your brain does much of the most important work. Bad news…your brain’s first response is usually to convince you that change is bad, and you need to stay put. Makes sense too. Status quo requires less energy, less effort, and less pain…initially. When you avoid immediate pain by remaining in your comfort zone, you will often ensure long-term suffering because you did not respond and adjust when the time was optimal, and the opportunity was at hand. This is where it gets fun! We’ll help you re-wire your brain and your responses, helping you to more effectively and intentionally make changes, even when everything inside of you is screaming for you to stop! In a world you can’t control, filled with people you can’t control, sometimes the best defense is a good, adaptive offense!
